The title of the book refers to the four cups of wine used in the traditional Passover Seder, symbolizing God’s promises in Exodus 6. Hodges, founding pastor of Church of the Highlands in Alabama, takes a close look at the four promises in chapters 3 through 6 and shows how they relate to Christians today.
“I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians” (Ex 6:6) is God’s promise of Sanctification: God saves you.
“I will rescue you from your slavery” (Ex 6:6) is God’s promise of Deliverance: God delivers you from the pain and scars of yesterday.
“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment” (Ex 6:6) is God’s promise of Redemption: God reveals his purpose for you.
“I will take you as my own people and I will be your God” (Ex 6:7) is God’s promise of Praise: God enables you to live a life of fulfillment.
Chris Hodges is a relational pastor, and he writes like one. While reading this book I could easily imagine him standing in front of his congregation, encouraging his people in their relationship with God. Yes, the material is simple; some might feel this book is entry-level stuff.
For a relatively small book, “Four Cups” has plenty of value. Most who read this book will be uplifted and encouraged to focus on God’s promises to deliver them from bondage and discover God’s purpose for their lives.
